Hubei Provincial Museum

The Hubei Provincial Museum is located in Donghu Road in City of Wuhan, Hubei Province.

It's founded in 1993 and the entire museum covers an area of 51,000 square meters. This three layers concrete structure is one of the most important museums in China.

There are 140,000 precious cultural relics collected from the Stone Age to modern in the Hubei Provincial Museum. Among them, more than 600 listed as national class exhibit items. That makes the museum famous and became the emphases of others. The precious collections are as follows:

There are many exquisite bronze wares and gold jade wares from Shang Dynasty (1401B.C.~1122B.C.) to Qin Dynasty (248B.C.~207B.C.). The bronze wares of the Zenghouyi's tomb unearthed in 1978 are the representative works of Bronze Age in China.

Among the gold jade wares, there are the jade carving portraits and animals of the New Stone Age and the 16-section jade of the period of the Warring States (403B.C.~222B.C.). Additionally many kinds of gold wares of Qin Dynasty unearthed from the Zenghouyi's tomb portray the artifice of that period.

The instruments have complete varieties. There are the earliest Chinese archaistic copper drum, the largest scale and the most perfectly kept Zenghouyi chain bells and the earliest specimens such as the bamboo flute, lute, bell and many others.

Among the lacquer wares, the small wood-carved lacquer ware screen represents the highest level of instrument technology in Chinese Qin Dynasty. There are the ancients' life utensils, musical instruments, handicraft articles, burying utensils, weapons etc. These precise lacquer wares appliances are not visible in modern life.

The collection of calligraphy and paintings are age-old. The successive lacquer paintings and bamboo books far from the period of Qin Dynasty and Han Dynasty are both rare works in the Chinese art history and calligraphy history.

You can appreciate the important artworks on master Jiangxia of Ming Dynasty (1386 ~ 1644A.D.), and many good works and manuscripts of the famous calligrapher Yangshoujin in Ch'ing Dynasty (1644 ~ 1911A.D.). There are many modern artworks from the modern artists presented here as well, like Zhangdaqian and many others.

The Hubei Provincial Museum holds various characteristic exhibitions from time to time, because it has rich collections of the cultural relics. For example, "the lacquer ware exposition of Warring States and Qin, Han Dynasty unearthed in Hubei", "the performance exposition of ancient musical instruments" and many others are the charm of this museum.
