Willow Waves Pavilion with Birds Singing

Known as one of "Ten Scenes of the West Lake", the Willow Waves Pavilion with Birds Singing is located at the Southeast part of West Lake, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.

The scene of "orioles singing in the willows" shows the salient feature of the West Lake.

Named as the "Scene Collecting Garden", the Willow Waves Pavilion with Birds Singing was once the most splendid and largest imperial garden in Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). But it gradually went downhill and declined when Yuan Dynasty took Southern Song place.

In fact, the scene of "orioles singing in the willows" presents the most beautiful landscape when spring comes. The flowers are in blossom and the willow trees turn green. And tourists go boating by cruises far away. What a beautiful picture it is!

Luckily, the "Scene Collecting Garden" was rebuilt to be the "Willow Waves Garden with Birding Singing", covering an area of 300m. It includes the "Bird Singing Garden", "Southern Garden", which the former one is the main park.

Emperor Qianlong, Qing Dynasty paid a visit to the garden and wrote the inscription of "Orioles Singing in the Willows" in the present Bird Singing Hall.

After walking across "Bird Singing Garden", you come to "Birds Garden", hundreds of birds living here. Here, you could enjoy the nice sounds by the orioles, the thrushes and the red billed leiothrixes. Furthermore, you could observe their nests, their life habits.

Can you recognize the different willows? Do you know how many kinds of willows at Willows Wave Garden with Bird Singing? Here, you could see around 500 willows on the banks of the West Lke. There are 3 main types of willows here, the drinking willows, the lion willows and the gauze kerchief willows.

The drinking willows are like the drunk. And the lion willows have strong branches and wide leaves, which are like the huge lions' heads. While the gauze kerchief willow, as it is called, the leaves are very soft, smooth and gentle.

The willow waves, singing orioles, the green and clear water consist of the picturesque scenery at Willow Waves Pavilion. You surely enjoy the beautiful scenes if you pay a visit to West Lake, Hangzhou.
